When I took over purchasing for our shop in 2020, I thought the hard part would be negotiating prices. It wasn't. The hard part was understanding what we were actually buying. We bought a less expensive inverter MIG two years earlier. On steel, it was fine. On aluminum, it gave Dan headaches. The rework and grinding time probably cost us more than the price difference. What I'd Do Differently
If I could go back, I'd start with a demo instead of a spreadsheet. I'd ask about consumables compatibility earlier, and I'd trust the operator's reaction more. The turning point wasn't a line-item cost. It was Dan's confidence after the test weld. There's something satisfying about crossing that line off the budget, especially after all the research and diplomacy.
