For field repair, consistency matters less than availability.

A working station with a water cooler, fiber, spare lenses, shielding gas, and proper PPE is closer to $8,000-$10,000. The bigger cost is gas. Laser welding uses a lot of argon or a helium-argon mix. On a full shift, gas can cost more than electricity in a year. Few people include that in the comparison.
A truck welding machine costs $12,000-$20,000 for the welder, plus the truck. If you have field work, it pays for itself. If you don't, it's dead capital sitting in a parking lot.
Per FTC business guidance (ftc.gov), claims have to be truthful, not misleading, and substantiated. When a supplier says 'zero maintenance' or 'guaranteed 100% defect-free welds', ask for the weld test data.
Conclusion on cost: fixed production shifts the value to Fronius. Thin-gauge work with clean fit-up can favor a hand laser, but only if you count consumables. Field service needs a truck welder even if it isn't efficient in the shop.
3. Training and labor: the MIG welder vacancy problem
If you have a MIG welder vacancy, the machine decision matters more than many buyers think. This is the dimension where Fronius loses. Fronius shop machines are not designed to bounce over potholes in a service truck. The circuit boards and inverters are too sensitive. If your business is field repairs, pipeline work, or emergency maintenance, an engine-driven truck welding machine is the only answer.
So glad I checked the duty cycle before ordering a machine for a customer's truck. Almost bought a continuous-duty MIG welder that would have derated badly in direct sun. We went with a CV/CC engine-driven unit instead. That was not about brand preference. It was about physical reality.
But don't let the word 'mobile' fool you. A truck welder is a tool, not a technology statement. It can produce acceptable repair welds, but it is not a substitute for fabrication equipment when you get back to the shop. Most service companies I've reviewed need both: a truck for the field and a Fronius machine for the bench.
