Fronius TPS 400i Price: What I Learned Buying Welding Equipment for a Small Shop

Small shops can't afford cheap welding machines. That sounds backward, but I've watched it play out for four years.
I'm the office administrator for a 22-person metal fabrication company in Mooresville, NC. I don't weld, but I buy for people who do. Roughly $350,000 in purchasing crosses my desk each year, from welding wire to shop rags. I report to both operations and finance, which means I hear both sides: the production crew wants tools that hold up; the accountants want a price that doesn't scare the owner.
When I took over purchasing in 2021, I had the same instinct as finance: 'A welding machine is a welding machine. Buy the cheaper one and make it work.' I was wrong. Not because cheap machines never work, but because a small shop has no slack to absorb them when they don't.
The Downtime Math I Missed
In 2022, I saved $1,400 by accepting a budget quote for a new welding station setup. It wasn't an unknown brand, and it wasn't the bottom of the barrel. It just wasn't a genuine industrial unit. Eighteen weeks later, the main power source faulted and the machine spent almost two weeks at an out-of-state repair facility. We rented a replacement for $1,050. The overtime catch-up added another $760. The vendor's support line stopped returning my messages after the invoice was closed.
That $1,400 saving cost us $1,810 and a lot of peace. The math was worse than that, because the delayed jobs affected two customer deadlines, and one of them still remembers the late delivery.
One more thing about that repair: the $1,810 did not include the quiet annoyance on the floor. Our shop rate is around $85 an hour. A six-hour stoppage is $510 in unproductive labor before you spend a dollar on a repair. A machine that acts up once a month is a $6,000-a-year problem, and that's worse than the price difference between a budget unit and a proper Fronius.
That's the first reason I stopped looking at list prices. The cost of a machine is not the price on the quote. It's the price plus the risk of downtime, plus the availability of support, plus the willingness of a vendor to talk to a small company like ours.
The Fronius Machines I Actually Looked At
This is where Fronius made sense to me. I know people get hung up on the Fronius TPS 400i price. I don't have a single 'street price' to give you, because Fronius sells configured packages rather than a simple list price. Our quote for a TPS 400i package with a wire feeder, interconnecting hoses, and a proper torch came out to about three times what a typical online MIG machine costs. That sounds awful until you compare what the package is supposed to do.
The TPS 400i is a continuous-duty industrial power source. It's designed to run all day. It has the cooling, the duty cycle, and the process control that a basic machine cannot offer. Fronius publishes these numbers under EN 60974-1, and that standard is what I actually put in a spreadsheet. For a shop doing eight hours of real production, paying the TPS 400i price is defending your operations budget, not inflating it.
For a smaller shop like ours, though, the better answer is usually the Fronius TransSteel 2200 multiprocess welder. It runs on standard 230V power, covers MIG/MAG, lift TIG, and stick welding, and it doesn't need a three-phase supply. It is a genuine Fronius and still a compact machine. I'd rather see a shop buy the 2200 and spend the difference on a good station setup than stretch for the 400i and have no money left for the details.
The Parts of the Station Nobody Quotes
One phrase I learned the hard way: 'terminal welding machine.' In our shop, that means the complete output side of the station—the power source terminals, the Dinse connectors, the work cable, and the ground clamp. It's not a fancy product category. It's the current path from the machine to the weld. If someone says 'I need a terminal welding machine,' they are not asking for a different machine. They are asking for the machine plus the terminal setup done properly. I know because I once ordered the wrong thing and then heard about it at lunch.
That leads to another phrase: welding station equipment. The machine gets the attention, but the station is what makes the machine usable. A torch liner, a gas regulator, a fume extraction arm, a spare contact tip pack—those all add up. If your budget only covers the machine, the first time the liner gets chewed up, the whole setup stops. When I cost out a welding station equipment order now, I budget 20 to 30 percent beyond the power source for the rest of the station.
Renting Before Buying

When I was doing homework, I placed a small consumables order to see how they handled it. The order was about $240. It arrived on time, the invoice matched the quote, and a human being answered the phone when I followed up. That might not sound special, but every procurement person knows how rare it is.
A vendor that respects a small order is a vendor you can trust with a large one. That is why today's tiny account should never be treated as a nuisance—it might be next year's capital expense.
But What About the Budget?
I can hear the objection: 'We're a small shop. We don't need a Fronius. We need a welder that works.' Fine. I agree. My honest recommendation for most shops is the Fronius TransSteel 2200 multiprocess welder, not the TPS 400i. The 2200 costs significantly less, handles a wide range of processes, and is enough for intermittent production and repair work.
What I push back on is buying two low-end machines for the same money as one good machine. In our shop, that strategy creates more confusion, more setup time, and more repairs. I'd rather have one reliable station and a short list of rental or borrowing options than an extra machine nobody trusts.
The Fronius TPS 400i price is not the real question. The real question is whether your welding operation can afford to fail on a Tuesday morning. For us, the answer was no, and every quote I compare after that has to include the cost of being wrong.
What I'd Buy Today
If I were setting up a small shop from scratch, I would do what I recommended to our owner this year: start with the Fronius TransSteel 2200 multiprocess welder for general work, pair it with a properly configured terminal welding station, and spend the rest of the budget on good consumables and tooling. If production ever reaches the point where we're running eight-hour shifts and need a water-cooled torch and a true industrial power source, then I'd buy the TPS 400i—and I'd do it without flinching, because by then the machine would have earned its keep.
Small shops don't need to apologize for their size. They need tools that don't fail when there is no backup. Fronius isn't the cheapest choice. I'm okay with that. I'd rather explain a good purchase once in a budget meeting than explain a missed deadline twice to a customer.
