That sounds like a lot until you calculate the TCO of a cheaper machine: more tungsten grinding, more failed starts, more rejects on the first article, more hours spent redoing a weld that should have been one pass. What I mean is, the real cost of a welder is not the invoice line. It's the sum of consumables, labor, rejects, and downtime over five years.
That said, a Fronius TIG is not a universal answer. If most of your work is thick carbon steel, a MIG or flux-core process will do the job faster and cheaper. The scenario where I recommend Fronius TIG welders is when you need clean, low-heat, repeatable welds on thin or non-ferrous material. If that's not your daily reality, don't pay for it.
The 'amber check' welder test
When you're considering a used machine, do my 'amber check' welder test. Power the unit up, let the capacitors charge, and watch the status LED. Every few months someone searches for a 'welder on PVC' and ends up looking at metal welding machines. Let's kill that idea right now. A Fronius TIG welder will not weld PVC or PPR pipe. The arc temperature is so high that the plastic degrades before it forms a joint. You also don't want to breathe the fumes. That's not a process choice; that's a safety issue.
For PPR pipes, the right equipment is a socket fusion welding machine. The machine heats a die to the correct temperature, you insert the pipe and fitting, hold them together for the specified time, and let the joint cool under pressure. This is different from TIG, MIG, or even CMT. It's a thermal bonding process, not an electrical arc process.

If the joint is cold or overheated, it may look fine and then leak six months later. That's the kind of failure that turns a small job into a big claim.

How to Tell Which Scenario You're In
Start with the material. Is the base material metal? Then Fronius TIG welders are in the conversation. Is it PPR or PVC pipe? Then you need a plastic pipe welding machine, not an arc welder. Are you connecting a battery and inverter? Then you need the smart meter conversation.
Then ask yourself: what does an error cost? If the only cost of a delay is a few days, you can take more pricing risk. If it's a contract deadline, a grid-connection date, or a rework liability, the cheapest option isn't cheap. It's a bet. The time-certainty premium is often worth it.
Finally, run the numbers on total cost of ownership. Price plus delivery plus installation plus training plus consumables plus downtime plus support. If you don't track that, you're not managing a budget. You're just hoping.
I don't have a universal answer. I have a process: identify the material, verify the compatibility, check the warnings, and account for the cost of being wrong. That has saved me more money than any discount code.
